ROSEAU-Ten Chess players from Dominica will compete in the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest this month.Â
Dominica’s delegation (five males, five females) is set to compete in tournaments from September 10 to 23. The players will participate in the Open and Women’s Tournaments. This is the first time Dominica will field a women’s team for the event.
According to a statement by the Dominica Chess Federation, the players were selected based on their performance in the National Tournament held earlier this year: Robert Bridet, Jones Murphy, Larry Thomas, Nigel Francis, and Lyndon Auguiste for the Open Tournament; and Ayani Casimir, Liudmila Domennova, Zahidu Henry, Desalee Daniel, and Dorothy Jno Baptiste for the Women’s Tournament.
The Chess Olympiad is a distinguished biennial event organized by FIDE (the International Chess Federation), which oversees the sport of chess. The tournament features national teams competing for gold medals, trophies, and the title of the world’s strongest chess nation.
Over 190 teams will participate in the Open segment of this year’s event. This year’s Olympiad has 11 rounds and will be conducted in a Swiss team format with classical time controls of 90 plus 30 which means players will have 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game. The team with the highest match points after the tournament will emerge the winner.
Over the last several months, the teams have been preparing with the assistance of international coaches assigned.
Dominica’s participation in this year’s tournament is sponsored FIDE and the Dominica Olympic Committee.
