PHILIPSBURG-Initiated by the Department of Sports – SXM, the development of a small multipurpose pitch at the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex (RISC) has begun using salvaged materials from the recent replacement of the main football field at Raoul Illidge Sports Complex.
Instead of disposing at the landfill, the best sections of the old turf and infill have been repurposed to create a new field. Measuring 30 by 20 meters, this smaller field is designed to better accommodate the high demand for field usage and to help reduce the wear on the FIFA Pro field.
Phase 1 comprised clearing and compacting of the ground while restoring office and maintenance space at the John Cooper Jose Lake Ball Park was the focus of Phase 2. In phase two of the pitch installation, the substructure was created using base course material, compacted, and equipped with curb stones. The substructure has been designed with a slope to ensure proper drainage. The team from Akashco & Maintenance is now preparing the recycled turf for placement.
Meanwhile, the pillars and entry ramp have been completed for the placement of two containers at the John Cooper Jose Lake Ballpark. In the next phase, the containers will be placed and modified for usage.
