New Parliamentary year opens Tuesday Sep.10

PHILIPSBURG- The new Parliamentary Year 2024-2025 will be opened tomorrow Tuesday September 10, 2024.

A public meeting is therefore scheduled for 10.00 hrs. in the General Assembly Chamber of the House at Wilhelminastraat #1 in Philipsburg.

As is customary, a speech will be delivered by His Excellency the Governor of Sint Maarten, Ajamu Baly expounding on the policy and program to be pursued by the Government. This is an annual event, held on the second Tuesday of September or at an earlier date to be laid down by national ordinance, in accordance with article 46 of the Constitution that marks the beginning of the new Parliamentary Year.

President of Parliament, Sarah Wescott-Williams is also expected to announce the 2024 President of Parliament Award recipient at the reception ceremony, thereafter.

A live broadcast of the event with special commentary will start at 9:10 hrs on the SXM Parliament YouTube channel.

Earlier today, in Public meeting no. 22, the President of Parliament officially closed the Parliamentary Year 2023-2024 in accordance with article 46 of the Constitution.

The closure of the Parliamentary Year is an opportune moment for reflection. For this reason, Faction Leaders in Parliament were given the opportunity to direct themselves to Parliament and the public of Sint Maarten for a maximum of 10 minutes and reflect on this Parliamentary Year.

The President of Parliament also reflected on the Parliamentary Year and mentioned important highlights that took place.

Before the end of the meeting, the President of Parliament expounded on the theme for the Opening of the Parliamentary Year 2024-2025: Uncovering and supporting agriculture and sustainable agricultural practices.

Additionally, Parliament is scheduled to sit in a Central Committee meeting on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 11.00 hrs. to receive an update by and go into discussions with the Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication regarding agriculture on Sint Maarten.
