KRALENDIJK-A large part of Bonaire was hit by a power outage again on Monday evening. This is reported by Water and Energy Company Bonaire (WEB). According to the utility company, it is a so-called ‘Brown Out’. Power outages were also reported earlier today.
Not all districts were affected by the power outage. There was no electricity cut in Rincon, Sabadeco and parts of Hato.
“The automatic protection system has automatically disconnected one of the main cables connecting the production facility in Karpata to WEB As a result, the second cable has been overloaded,” according to WEB.
WEB prioritized connecting the Mariadal hospital, where power was restored around 1:00 a.m. Other areas followed suit. WEB reports that around 3 a.m., electricity was back in most neighborhoods.
In order to continue to supply all districts with electricity, WEB has embarked on a bridging programme that will take place in several phases. In each switching round, there are a number of districts that are without electricity for two hours. On the Facebook page of WEB the utility company shares which districts are next for each phase.
The power outage should have been resolved by now, but just as the recovery process was fully underway, another short circuit occurred at a completely different location in the distribution network (Antriol). WEB reports that technicians are working to resolve the issue.
Bonaire was also hit several times by power outages last week. Residents have expressed their dissatisfaction on Facebook.
