WILLEMSTAD-Justice Minister Shalten Hato (MFF) has introduced a new law to strengthen the rights of victims of sexual crimes. Hato announced this in a Facebook post on Monday afternoon.
The law stems from the need to better address sexual misconduct, such as sexual violence and child abuse. In particular, the increase in child pornography and outdated legislation require a more modern approach.
“The new legislation offers victims compensation for the often devastating suffering they experience and introduces stricter measures to deal with perpetrators,” Hato writes. The focus is on forcing offenders to change their behaviour through punishment and behavioural interventions, which should also contribute to preventing the recurrence of crimes.
Hato emphasizes that the law is not only about punishing perpetrators, but also about ensuring justice for victims. “This law provides a strong legal framework that protects victims and tackles sexual crimes more effectively,” Hato said.
