MIAMI-A new tropical system has emerged in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, designated as Tropical Depression Seven.
The system is currently located west of the Cabo Verde Islands and is expected to remain over open waters for several days.
As of 2:00 pm today, the National Hurricane Center reported that the centre of Tropical Depression Seven was positioned near latitude 16.0 North and longitude 28.7 West.
The depression is currently moving in a west-northwest direction at a speed of about 18 mph (30 km/h).
Forecasters predict that the system will continue on a west to west-northwest trajectory over the next few days, albeit at a slower pace.
Maximum sustained winds within the depression are reported to be near 35 mph (55 km/h), with higher gusts.
However, meteorologists anticipate some strengthening over the next 48 hours.
The NHC says there’s a possibility that the depression could intensify into a tropical storm as soon as tonight or Thursday. If it does, it will be called Tropical Storm Gordon.
Despite its formation, there are currently no coastal watches or warnings in effect. The system’s projected path keeps it over open waters for the foreseeable future, reducing immediate concerns for coastal regions.
