Off Duty Police shoots bandit

PHILIPSBURG-A St. Maarten Police Force (KPSM) detective shot and critically injured an armed robber on Monday evening in Cole Bay after witnessing a robbery in progress.

Around 9:15 pm, the off-duty detective was driving on Welfare Road when he saw two men, dressed in black, threatening a supermarket cashier with a gun. The supermarket, a Chinese-owned business, is located near the entrance to Pelican Key.

The detective immediately reported the robbery to Central Dispatch, exited his vehicle, and confronted the suspects. Despite orders to drop the weapon, the robbers did not comply. The detective shot one suspect, who fell to the ground, while the other fled toward Pelican Key, escaping up Billy Folly Road.

A KPSM patrol unit arrived shortly after and searched for the fleeing suspect, who remained at large after an hour and a half. A manhunt is ongoing.

The injured suspect was taken to St. Maarten Medical Center in critical condition, while police cordoned off the area to investigate the incident. Authorities are urging anyone with information on the escaped suspect to come forward.
