PHILIPSBURG-The Mental Health Foundation (MHF), Collective Prevention Services (CPS), and the Men’s Mental Health Awareness Foundation of St Maarten have launched the “ARE YOU OK?” campaign to draw attention to the importance of mental health.
Organisers of the campaign say it was designed to encourage individuals to engage with loved ones, friends, and colleagues who may be silently struggling.
Both organisations have joined forces in recognising World Suicide Prevention Day today with the campaign. This year’s theme, ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide,’ highlights the need for altering perceptions and instilling hope in individuals grappling with suicidal thoughts and behaviours.
The organisers are optimistic that the initiative will encourage individuals to ask a simple but impactful question, ‘Are you OK?’—a gesture that can help those experiencing suicidal thoughts express their feelings and struggles.
In a press statement, organizers noted that conversations about suicide are often considered taboo, making it even more important to break the silence. When someone’s behaviour seems off, reaching out with, “Are you OK?” can be a crucial first step. A compassionate, person-centred approach, such as saying: ‘I’ve noticed things have been tough lately. Would you like to talk about it?’ can foster meaningful dialogue the statement said.
Throughout the month, MHF, CPS, and the Men’s Mental Health Awareness Foundation say they will host events to engage the community, reduce stigma, and promote open discussions about mental health. A broad campaign across various media platforms will also share essential information on recognizing signs of suicide, providing support, and accessing help.
