ORANJESTAD-The government of Aruba has fallen. Prime Minister Evelyne Wever-Croes submitted her resignation to the governor on Monday. The fall of the cabinet follows a conflict between her MEP party and the coalition partner RAIZ over the distribution of parliamentary presidencies.
The tension escalated on Monday during the parliamentary election of the president and vice-president, according to various media outlets. RAIZ’s candidate Raymond Kamperveen was elected as chairman, which led to dissatisfaction at MEP. Because the conflict proved irreconcilable, the cabinet fell. Wever-Croes announced that the cabinet will go to the governor with all MEP ministers to submit their resignations.
Wever-Croes has asked the governor to dissolve parliament and call new elections, which will now take place on December 6. Parties must submit their lists of candidates by 18 October at the latest.
This latest shakeup in the Dutch Caribbean follows closely on the heels of the fall of the governments of Curacao and St. Maarten mere weeks apart in 2024.
